Citizenship

The concept of an active citizen is core to the curriculum of citizenship in Northern Ireland and CSPE in the Republic of Ireland.

Click here to visit our CSPE website - a fantastic tool with details on the core concepts and units on the CSPE curriculum; it also has a very useful section that will support you in working on your action projects

“An active citizen…is someone who not only believes in the concept of a democratic society but who is willing and able to translate that belief into action. Active citizenship is a compound of knowledge, skills and attitudes: knowledge about how society works; the skills needed to participate effectively; and a conviction that active participation is the right of all citizens”

Please refer to our dedicated CSPE/Citizenship resources below.

Solidaridad (PDF, 2.5MB) is a resource that provides an opportunity to address the issue of Child Labour through case studies from our partners in Nicaragua, whilst Chinya (PDF, 1.1MB) examines the MDG’s (Millennium Development Goals) utilising case studies from our partners in Malawi. Both resources provide explicit strong links to the formal curriculum of CSPE and Citizenship.
