Trócaire's work on Debt
Many families struggle to pay loans they have inherited
Trócaire works on debt as an instrument of development finance but also from a justice perspective. Debt reduction is critical to many very poor countries as it is a drain on scarce resources and hinders economic development.
Moreover, debt is a question of justice because current generations struggle to repay loans contracted with inadequate domestic public oversight over the uses to which these resources were put. Some loans went to corrupt leaders, others went to projects which failed but the loans nonetheless have to be repaid. Debt reduction is a critical element in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
