I am writing to express my deep concern about the current humanitarian and political crisis in Zimbabwe. Since the first round of elections, which took place in March, over 80 people have been killed, 3,000 people injured and over 30,000 people have been driven from their homes. I believe that if the run-off election goes ahead in Zimbabwe this Friday world leaders should explicitly refuse to recognise Robert Mugabe’s re-election as president. The Irish & UK government should lead this call within the European Union and I believe the government of South Africa should lead this call among African leaders. The government of Zimbabwe has supported a campaign of violence and terror during the run up to this election while ignoring the humanitarian crisis affecting four million people of its own people. No credible government should recognise Robert Mugabe as a legitimate leader after Friday and I am asking you to do everything in your power to make sure your government joins this call.
