Tsunami Three Years On

The Asia tsunami struck in Dec 26th 2004, killing a quarter of a million people and leaving 1.7 million people homeless.
Trócaire received €28.7 million from the Irish public and €1.5 million from the Irish Government (through Irish Aid) to fund our emergency response.
Trócaire has concentrated it’s work in four countries affected by the tsunami: Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India.
Trócaire’s work then………
-
Much of Trócaire’s early work in these countries was focused on emergency relief for families left homeless and traumatised by the disaster. After a few months, Trócaire’s focus shifted to recovery work – building homes, renovating schools, helping the affected populations re-build their livelihoods through training.
Trócaire’s work now………..
-
Now Trócaire is working to helping the affected communities become less vulnerable to future disasters.
This work is helping communities to be better prepared for possible future disasters, for example, by building stronger, more durable homes, helping families diversify their income so they are less vulnerable if a disaster hits and helping communities develop ‘disaster drills’ so they know what to do if an emergency arises.
Many tsunami-affected communities are prone to natural disasters, and helping them prepare for what may lie ahead is a key component of sustainable development work in the regions.
Kathy Mullen, from No Strings is in Ireland to help Trócaire showcase some of the innovative ways in which we are helping communities prepare for future disasters.
